THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with the exact point that confuses you and your course level. Ask for one explanation, one example and a question that checks whether you can explain the idea back.

An explanation that sounds clear is only a first step. Use AI as a patient practice partner and compare important details with your class notes or textbook.

A practical workflow.

  1. Identify the gap

Explain what you already understand and where the explanation stops making sense. Include a formula, passage or diagram description when that is relevant, with private details removed.

  2. Match the level

Name the course level and the vocabulary your teacher expects. Ask the AI to introduce unfamiliar terms before using them and to flag uncertain claims.

  3. Work through one example

Ask for a concrete example with its reasoning. For maths or science, compare every step with your course method. Ask where an analogy stops matching the actual concept.

  4. Explain it back

Close the explanation and describe the idea in your own words. Ask the AI to identify one misunderstanding and give a follow-up question without supplying the answer immediately.

Study cycle: understand a topic, practise without notes, check your answer, then revisit the gaps.

READY TO MAKE YOURS

Start with this prompt.

Help me understand [topic] at [level]. I am stuck on [specific point]. Use these course notes: [notes]. Explain in plain language, give one concrete example and ask me to explain the idea back. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. Flag uncertainty and distinguish analogies from the actual concept.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Replace the brackets. Leave out private details. Check the response.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A clearer request.

A VAGUE STARTExplain everything about photosynthesis.

A CLEARER BRIEFI understand that plants use light, but I am confused about where the carbon in a plant comes from. Explain at my course level, then ask me one question and wait.

The prompt targets a specific misunderstanding and makes the learner participate.

Before you use the result.

  • Key terms agree with course materials.
  • Examples support the concept rather than replace it.
  • You can explain the reasoning yourself.
  • Uncertainty is clearly labelled.

A few useful answers.

Should I paste a whole textbook chapter?

Start with the smallest relevant passage you are permitted to share. Name your question and include enough context to avoid an ambiguous answer.

What if the AI and my notes disagree?

Check the original material or ask your teacher. Do not assume a confident AI explanation is correct. Ask it to identify the point of disagreement.

PUT THE GUIDE TO WORK

Use AI to understand a topic, then explain it yourself

A clear explanation is a useful starting point, but it is not the same as understanding. Give your AI study partner one question, the course material you are using and the point where you get stuck. Then test whether you can explain the idea without looking at the answer.

Name the exact gap

Instead of asking for an entire chapter, describe the step you cannot follow. You might understand a definition but not know when it applies, or follow a worked example but struggle to start a new problem. Those gaps need different help. Bring the relevant passage or question and tell the tool what you have already tried. Ask it to check your explanation before producing another long explanation of its own.

Use a different example to check transfer

After studying one explanation, try a nearby example with a small change. If you learned how to solve one equation, change a number or the position of a term. If you learned a concept, choose a case that almost fits and explain why it does or does not. Keep the course definition as the reference. An analogy can make an idea approachable, but you should also identify where the analogy stops matching the topic.

Open a card, copy the prompt and replace the brackets with your own details. Each card includes a follow-up and a check before you use the answer.

SITUATION 01

Find the missing step

Get help at the point where your understanding breaks. Open the prompt

Have these readysource passage · your explanation · specific question

Use [course passage] to check my explanation: [attempt]. Identify the first missing or incorrect step that matters to [question]. Ask me one question to clarify my thinking before explaining it. Stay within the supplied course material and flag anything you cannot verify.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Refine the next draft
Give me a hint about that step without completing the whole answer. Wait for my next attempt.

Before you use it
A correction should agree with your course source, not just sound persuasive.

SITUATION 02

Use an analogy with its limits

Make the idea approachable without replacing its definition. Open the prompt

Have these readyconcept · course definition · familiar activity

Explain [concept] using [course definition] and an analogy from [familiar activity]. State which parts of the analogy match and where it breaks down. Then give the precise definition again in plain language. Do not add claims outside the supplied source.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Refine the next draft
Ask me to identify one way the analogy could mislead a beginner, then check my answer against the definition.

Before you use it
Use the analogy to begin, then return to the actual concept.

SITUATION 03

Try a nearby example

Check whether you can use the idea beyond the first example. Open the prompt

Have these readyworked example · course rules · your level

From [worked example and course rules], create one similar problem with a small change for [level]. Do not show the answer first. After I attempt it, explain the first incorrect step using the source. If the source is insufficient to check the problem, say what is missing.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Refine the next draft
Create a second example that tests the same idea in a different form, keeping it within my course scope.

Before you use it
Check the generated question and answer before using it for revision.

SITUATION 04

Explain it back in your own words

Find gaps hidden by a familiar-looking explanation. Open the prompt

Have these readyconcept · source · your short explanation

Check this explanation of [concept]: [my explanation]. Reference source: [source]. Identify what is correct, what is missing and what is inaccurate. Ask one follow-up that would reveal whether I understand the central distinction. Do not rewrite my entire explanation before I try again.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Refine the next draft
Compare my revised explanation with my first attempt. Name the one improvement that matters most.

Before you use it
Your final explanation should be something you can defend with the source and an example.

The examples below are original, illustrative edits using fictional situations. They show the checks to make, rather than promising what an AI tool will produce.

Copy a concept-check worksheet

Topic: [one concept] Course source: [passage or page] What I can explain: [my current understanding] Where I get stuck: [one step or distinction] Example I can solve: [example] Nearby example to try: [small change] My explanation without notes: [attempt] Correction to verify: [check against the course source]

WORKED EXAMPLE

Find a specific gap in an equation

Illustrative attempt: a learner solving 3x + 6 = 18 subtracts 6 correctly, reaching 3x = 12, then writes x = 12.

FIRST DRAFTI do not understand algebra. Explain everything.

AFTER CHECKINGI reached 3x = 12 from 3x + 6 = 18. I am unsure how to isolate x from here. Give me a hint about what the 3 means, then let me try.

What changed
The new request identifies the exact step. Dividing both sides by 3 gives x = 4; substituting 4 into the original equation gives 18. The learner can check the result rather than memorise it.

WORKED EXAMPLE

An example should not replace the definition

Illustrative course note: an observation records what was noticed; a hypothesis proposes a possible explanation.

FIRST DRAFTYellow leaves mean the plant is definitely overwatered.

AFTER CHECKINGYellow leaves are an observation. Overwatering is one possible explanation to investigate, rather than a confirmed conclusion from that observation alone.

What changed
The example makes the distinction concrete without using the topic as a reason to overstate a diagnosis.

Try it with your own task.

Close the explanation and write a two-sentence teach-back. If you cannot explain the key distinction yet, return to that gap rather than collecting more notes.

Use a template for the step you are working on. Add the required inputs, then check the result against your source material.

Browse the task-guide directory ↗

Use a small workflow that you can repeat.

  1. Name the topic, your level and the exact part that is confusing.
  2. Supply a short permitted extract or your own notes so the task has a clear source.
  3. Try the question yourself before asking for a solution. Request hints and feedback on your reasoning.
  4. Return to weak topics on another day and test recall without looking at the explanation.

Keep in mind: Do not upload restricted course materials or submit generated work as your own. AI should not certify that an answer meets your teacher’s marking scheme.

Hints before the solution

Work through a problem without giving up ownership. You get: One hint at a time and a new practice problem

COPY. PERSONALISE. CHECK.

Bring: subject, level, problem, attempt

I am studying [subject] at [level]. Problem: [problem]. My attempt: [attempt]. Help me work through it with one small hint at a time. Begin by identifying the first step where my reasoning needs attention. Wait for my response before adding another hint. Do not reveal the final solution unless I ask after trying. Explain the principle using the notation in my course.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Example input
A student has set up an algebra equation correctly but made a sign error.

Illustrative scenario, not a generated or verified AI result.

Then ask
Ask me a similar problem with different values, without showing the worked solution.

Example input
A biology student needs to distinguish diffusion from osmosis.

Illustrative scenario, not a generated or verified AI result.

Then ask
Ask me to classify a new example and explain my choice before you give feedback.

Before using the answer
Verify the definitions and do not treat an analogy as a complete explanation.

COPY. PERSONALISE. CHECK.

Bring: notes, topic

Using these notes [notes], suggest a simple diagram to help me understand [topic]. List the nodes, the labelled connections and a short caption. Keep each label brief. Separate relationships explicitly supported by the notes from anything that needs clarification. Use a flowchart only when there is a sequence; use a comparison or concept map otherwise. Return a text layout I can draw by hand.

Open ChatGPT ↗

Example input
Notes describe a water cycle with evaporation, condensation and precipitation; the goal is to understand transitions.

Illustrative scenario, not a generated or verified AI result.

Then ask
